POSP stands for Point of Sales Person. It is an IRDAI-introduced certification (launched in 2015) that allows individuals to sell pre-approved insurance products, such as life, health, motor, travel, and personal accident policies, directly to customers. The POSP model was created specifically to increase insurance penetration across India by enabling more trained, flexible agents.

Age 18+, Class 10 pass (matriculation), valid Aadhaar card, PAN card, and a bank account in your name. No prior insurance knowledge, finance education, or work experience required. If you can communicate with people and operate a smartphone, you meet the criteria.

IRDAI mandates a minimum 15-hour training program covering insurance basics, policy types (life, health, motor, travel), the issuance process, KYC norms, claim procedures, and IRDAI regulations and ethics. Most platforms complete this in 2-3 days, entirely online. The training is typically free of cost.

The POSP exam is an IRDAI-approved online MCQ test, typically 50 questions with a 36-50% passing threshold depending on the insurer. Questions test basic insurance fundamentals — not advanced finance. Most candidates pass on the first attempt. Once certified, you can start issuing policies within a week of joining.
